《火线警探》改编自美国作家埃尔莫·伦纳德(ElmoreLeonard)2001年知名罪案小说《当心火药》(FireintheHole)，讲述美国联邦执行法警雷伦·吉文斯(RaylanGivens)使用传统方法解决现代案件的火线故事。雷伦浑身散发着浓浓的牛仔气息：头戴一顶浅色斯泰森毡帽，脚踏一对牛仔靴，腰备两把格洛克，不到万不得已绝不拔枪——要么不用，要用就快人一步、一击必中。雷伦出生于肯塔基州东部乡村小镇哈伦(Harlan)，在那度过了他的青涩年代——打球、追女、挖煤——这曾是其生活的全部。19岁时，他下定决心要成为一名联邦执法人员，毅然离开肯塔基。数年后，正当雷伦如愿以偿准备大展宏图之际，却因在迈阿密当众合理射杀持枪匪徒招致上级不满，被差遣回其发誓再也不回的家乡肯塔基。尼克·瑟西(NickSearcy)饰演雷伦的新上司、联邦法警署肯塔基州列克星敦分局首席执行法警阿特·穆伦(ArtMullen)；雅各布·皮茨(JacobPitts)饰演加入分局9个月的执行法警兼狙击手蒂姆·加特森(TimGutterson)，他曾作为陆军游骑兵参加阿战和伊战；埃丽卡·塔泽尔(EricaTazel)饰演常与雷伦搭档出勤的非裔执行法警瑞秋·布鲁克斯(RachelBrooks)。追踪逃犯、运送囚犯和保护证人则是他们作为联邦法警的基本工作。回到家乡的雷伦不得不面对曾经的故人：昔日出生入死的矿友死党博伊德·克劳德(BoydCrowder)，现在成了肩扛火箭筒轰教堂的新纳粹领袖；中学时互生情愫的村花啦啦队队长艾娃·克劳德(AvaCrowder)，早已嫁做他人妇；更少不了买房买着买着，却跟地产中介跑了的前妻薇诺娜·霍金斯(WinonaHawkins)；然而他最不愿意见到的，还是自己那位职业惯犯亲爹阿洛·吉文斯(ArloGivens)。
